Take Time for Yourself

You take care of everyone and everything…but are you taking care of yourself? Your physical and mental health are important, not just to you, but to everyone you interact with. When you control stress, eat wisely, and exercise, you give yourself the energy you need to maintain relationships, fulfill responsibilities, and care for the people who need you. It’s time to start prioritizing your health needs and set aside some time to take care of them. You don’t have to feel guilty about spending some time on yourself. If you can find the time to take a shower and brush your teeth, you can find the time to take a few little steps for your heart, mind, and body—and VA can help.

Comprehensive Primary Care

Prioritize your health and find the time to talk with your health care provider about improving it. Your provider can work with you to set health goals and create a plan for achieving them. Make the call. You’re more than worth the time you’ll spend.

HealtheLiving Assessment

If you would prefer to take a confidential, secure online survey of your health, you can take the HealtheLiving Assessment offered by VA.  It is available to everyone on the My HealtheVet website, and it just takes a few minutes to register for a username and password. The assessment asks questions about your health history, family history, and health habits. Using your responses, the tool produces personalized reports that show your health age, current health status, and suggestions to improve your health and lower your risk of disease.   Your health age is one number that summarizes your health status when considering your health habits and history.   If your health age is younger than your actual age, you are making excellent health choices which provide you with the health status of a younger person.  If your health age is older than your actual age, you have opportunities to improve your current and future health.   You can reduce your health age by making healthy changes.  Take the HealtheLiving Assessment and find out your health age today!


The old saying is “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”  The truth is that eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein can help limit the risk of some diseases, like diabetes or heart disease.  Take the time to make a plan for eating the foods that will keep you healthy.  What you may lose in time you’ll gain in energy, better sleep, and better health.


Everyone knows exercise is good for your health, but it can be hard to find the time for it. If you don’t have thirty minutes anywhere in your day to devote to exercise, try adding more physical activity to your regular routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. If you’re taking care of your kids, take them outside to run around and play together. Look at your routine, find the times when you’re sitting down, and see how you can get on your feet instead..

Mental Health

It’s important to prioritize your mental health, too. Take time out for relaxation, and time with family, friends and community. “Me time” can also be “we time” – the time you take for yourself that keeps you mentally healthy enough to help others. Talk with your VA health care provider about any conditions and situations that affect your mental health.
